Knowing this day would come didn’t make it any easier.

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2d5EpUb https://www.instagram.com/p/BK6zdXuDn5e/ The last known Rabbs’ Fringe-limbed Tree Frog has passed away in the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s frogPOD, where he has lived since 2008. He was collected as part of the Panamanian frog rescue mission in 2005, set forth by ABG and Zoo Atlanta to save frogs being decimated by chytrid fungus. I had the honor of working with him for almost 7 years, and in that time his sad story of being the very last of his kind had, in a powerfully sad way, made him an ‘ambassador' for amphibian conservation and awareness. Almost 40% of the world’s amphibian populations are documented as in decline, or already extinct. That means that this frog - who my son nicknamed ‘Toughie’ when he was 2 years old - is unfortunately not entirely unique in his situation. There are other species out there, blinking out before we even have a chance to recognize what was happening, let alone reverse it. Amphibians are disappea...

Last Known Frog of its Species Projcted Onto Vatican Church, by Tex Dworkin on Care2.com

Image
To coincide with the final days of the climate negotiations in Paris, the Vatican has permitted St. Peter’s Basilica to be turned into a huge backdrop for a   conservation-themed art installation , with huge images of various species being projected on to the building, including mammals, fish, insects and amphibians. One of the projected amphibians is believed to have dwindled down to a population of one—and the sole survivor lives in Atlanta, Ga. For  Fiat Lux: Illuminating Our Common Home ,  National Geographic photographers had their work projected onto the walls of St. Peter’s Basilica, the Renaissance church located within Vatican City, along with selections from   Joel Sartore’s Photo Ark , a project supported by the National Geographic Society that aims to bring attention to the plight of animals at the hands of human beings. An extension of the riveting film   Racing Extinction , giant images of various   creatures covered ...

A Great Short Frogolicious Video by Leilani Munter!

Initiative 1; Part 4: Captive Assurance Colonies.

Pictured here is a frog which is believed to be the last of its kind - the Rabbs' Fringe-limbed Tree Frog. While his story is incredibly sad, it emphasizes the importance of conserving biodiversity and paying attention to what the global amphibian declines are trying to tell us. In collaboration with Zoo Atlanta, we tried to establish an assurance colony of Rabbs' Fringe- limbed Tree Frog (#Ecnomiohyla rabborum) in 2005 and were able to get them to lay eggs, but the tadpoles never completed metamorphosis. While this collaboration with the zoo was able to establish assurance colonies of many Panamanian species threatened with extinction, we were unsuccessful with E. rabborum. Ten years later, this frog has a powerful message - one that has been told in National Geographic (thanks to @joelsartore and PhotoArk); in Huffington Post (thanks to @leilanimunter) and next month, he will be featured in a major documentary by Louie Psihoyos called #RacingExtinction . The movie premi...

Leilani Munter placing a picture of our resident Rabbs' Fringe-limbed Tree Frog on her race car for her next race!

Leilani Munter, and inspiring race care driver, activist and contributor to the feature film 'Racing Extinction' which sheds some much needed light on the global extinction crisis and features the Rabbs' Fring-limbed Tree Frog which is believed to be the last of its kind, and also resides in the frogPOD at the Garden. Here she is placing a Rabbs' frog decal on the side of her car, which she is about to take to 190 mph. A close-up of the Rabbs' Fringe-limbed Tree Frog decal on her car. The Rabbs' frog, Ecnomiohyla rabborum , was out in the frogPOD today when I checked on him    Leilani sent these pictures to me today from the Daytona Raceway, where she took her electric car, adorned with a picture of our Rabbs' Fringe-limed Tree Frog, to 190 mph. Leilani, visited the Garden after the frog was projected 30 stories high on the UN building last October during the #ProjectingChange event which highlighted endangered species and the (then) u...

Rabbs' Fringed Limbed Tree Frog and other species projected on the UN Building last weekend!

In June, Louie Psihoyos , Academy Award winning documentary film-maker for his movie  The Cove , was at the Garden with his crew to film our amphibian collections for his upcoming film Racing Extinction (@Extinction_OPS). The film, due out in 2015, brings awareness to the global extinction crisis, much like how his amazing documentary brought awareness to the plight of the dolphins in Japan. We were honored to be asked to contribute to this project, which will undoubtedly bring the extinction crisis — arguably effecting the amphibians most of all — to the awareness of the general public. To promote awareness of the extinction crisis and the upcoming film, a 30 story high visual saga was projected on the side of the UN building in NYC last weekend. The project is called #ProjectingChange. A video of...
We're on the road documenting endangered species with @joelsartore #ops6 pic.twitter.com/NAcOdqVcDD — Racing Extinction (@Extinction_OPS) May 13, 2014 Looking forward to Louis' next feature documentary ... the next one "Racing Extinction" will feature the frogs in the frogPOD!

New Documentary will feature the Garden's frogPOD

Louie Psihoyos, documentary film-maker who was awarded an Oscar (best documentary) for his film 'The Cove', is completing a new documentary on the global endangered species crisis. Louie's own personal concerns for the environment are reflected in his film topics and in the founding of the Oceanic Preservation Society. The Cove brought awareness to the continued slaughter of dolphins in Taitzi Bay, which is estimated at over 20,000 dolphin/year. His next documentary will highlight the imperiled species from around the world. The amphibian component will feature our Amphibian Conservation Program and was filmed in the frogPOD. The frogPOD houses, in isolation from other amphibians, one of the rarest assemblages of amphibians — all rescued from a chytrid fungus outbreak in Central Panama in 2005. Not the most spacious of places to film, but it worked. I will be sure to post when the movie is released. Here are some pictures from the filming. Joel Sartore, Nation Geogr...
