10 Ways to Help Garden Wildlife (Amphibians and more!) this Autumn

Image
I often tell people that making your yard more inhabitable for wildlife, including amphibians, involves LESS work on your property. Here are some great suggestions, clearly not a US article, but these suggestions are still relevant.

#AmbystomaWeek I of course, have to wrap up Ambystoma Week with the Frosted Flatwoods Salamander —

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2ln89Cu Our highest priority conservation project at The Amphibian Foundation. In the spring, we will be moving some of our adult salamanders outdoors where we have 20 mini ephemeral wetlands —#Mesocosms for natural breeding experiments. #FlatwoodsSalamanders #Ambystoma #Ambystomacingulatum #AmphibianFoundation #Salamander #Salamanders #SalamandersOfInstagram #FrogsNeedOurHelp

We are excited by all the requests we get for suggestions on how to make your yard more ' Amphibian Friendly ' — There are many great suggestions and we catalog all that we have found here: backyard.frogsneedourhelp.org Pond Building Guide (Tree Walkers International) Establishing Frog Habitats on Your Property (Frog and Tadpole Study Group)

#AmbystomaWeek Mole Salamanders are often overlooked as one of the coolest ambystomatid species.

#AmbystomaWeek ! Let's turn this mutha out with a Tiger Salamander —

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2yPR6vU Celebrating what is quite possibly the greatest group of amphibians — #Ambystomatidae Cool Fact: Larval Tiger Salamanders, AKA Water Dogs, AKA Dino Dogs can, if necessary, grow extra teeth and a much larger mouth in order to eat their siblings. You know, if food gets scarce. #CannibalMorph Larvae that exhibit this cannibal morph secret a hormone to suppress this expression in conspecifics. #Ambystoma #Ambystomatigrinum #TigerSalamander #Salamander #SalamandersOfInstagram #Salamanders

#AmbystomaWeek The first species I have ever worked with professionally is the Spotted Salamander, and they will always be near and dear to me.

Image
via Instagram http://ift.tt/2xm9Phd Cool Fact: Larval Spotted Salamanders can detect the presence of predators, through chemical cues in the ephemeral wetland. In response, they can grow larger tails to aid in their aquatic escape from predation. #Ambystoma #Ambystomamaculatum #SpottedSalamander #Salamander #SalamandersOfInstagram #Salamanders

#AmbystomaWeek Perhaps the most beautiful of the mole salamanders, the Marbled Salamander. Cool Fact: Marbled Salamanders are breeding RIGHT NOW throughout their range. They take the extra risk by reproducing now, and having their larval offspring over-winter in ephemeral wetlands, in part so their larvae are large enough to eat the larvae of amphibians that reproduce in the spring, like a normal amphibian. #Ambystoma #Ambystomaopacum #MarbledSalamander #Salamander #SalamandersOfInstagram #Salamanders

#AmbystomaWeek ! Next, let's check out the nominate species — the Mole Salamander. Looks almost like a #Temnospondyl with its comically huge head. Cool Fact: Larval Mole Salamanders can, if beneficial, skip all that metamorphosis business and stay larval, reach maturity and become reproductively active in the larval form! These juvenile looking adults have become that way through a process known as #Paedomorphosis #Ambystoma #Ambystomatalpoideum #MoleSalamander #Salamander #SalamandersOfInstagram #Salamanders

First Amphibian Foundation Calendar Now Available for 2018

This time last year, the Amphibian Foundation was breaking into the field of amphibian conservation as a new non-profit organization. Throughout 2017, we grew tremendously and, with your help, achieved several key accomplishments . This fall, we’re excited to announce our first fundraiser to help us continue growing and accomplishing our goals. Beginning Friday, October 13th, donate $20 or more to pre-order a unique 8.5” x 11” calendar created by the Amphibian Foundation. Calendars feature an up close and personal portrait of an extraordinary frog, salamander, or newt, and your support will directly help protect endangered amphibians and their habitats. Pre-order your calendar on our website and find answers to frequently asked questions. Pre-order before October 31st to receive the calendar for a special donation rate of $18. Amphibians are important for the health of humans and ecosystems. The foundation works everyday to protect amphibians (and rep

Gopher Frogs and many other species endemic to the Long Leaf Pine ecosystem of the southeast Coastal Plain are incurring an #ExtinctionDebt from historic and prolific habitat loss and fragmentation.

With many amazing partners, we have been working to conserve Gopher Frogs in GA for 10 years!

Gopher Frogs! Georgia's rarest frog suffers from habitat loss and fragmentation in the SE Coastal Plain.
