Green and Black Poison Frog, Dendrobates auratus on a begonia leaf in the Costa Rica display.

Image
One of the shyest in the Dendrobatidae, D. auratus spends a lot of time just out of sight. We have 10 of them on exhibit, though so you can usually see a few of these beautiful frogs at any time. #Dendrobatesauratus #Dendrobatidae #Dendrobates #PoisonFrog

Cruziohyla craspedopus, the Fringed Leaf Frog on exhibit today in our Amazon display. This is a truly amazing species that we are very lucky to work with. The Garden is one of the first places to ever breed this species and the first to have them on exhibit. Very little is known about their natural history as they rarely, if ever come down from the forest canopy. #Cruziohyla #Cruziohylacraspedopus #Phyllomedusinae #LeafFrog This is a truly amazing species that we are very lucky to work with. #Dorsal aspect of the same species as yesterday's post, the Granular Glass Frog, Cochranella granulosa.

Such a beautiful species, I can't get over how spectacularly colored these frogs are - no matter how you look at them. This was shot through the glass on exhibit just after I misted. #Cochranellagranulosa #Cochranella #Centrolenidae #GlassFrog

Monkey and Leaf Frogs of the sub-family Phyllomedusinae; one of the most beautiful and interesting groups of frogs

Image
A composite of different species within the sub-family Phyllomedusinae; family: Hylidae. The Leaf Frogs (genera: Agalychnis and Cruziohyla ) are so named from their incredible coloration and camouflage (sometimes bordering mimicry) as well as their reproductive behavior of laying eggs on leaves above water. Monkey Frogs (genus: Phyllomedusa typically have reduced webbing on the hands and feet and rather than jumping, seem to prefer climbing, with slow deliberate movements. You can find frogs of all these genera on exhibit in the Fuqua Conservatory lobby
