  To coincide with the final days of the climate negotiations in Paris, the Vatican has permitted St. Peter’s Basilica to be turned into a huge backdrop for a   conservation-themed art installation , with huge images of various species being projected on to the building, including mammals, fish, insects and amphibians. One of the projected amphibians is believed to have dwindled down to a population of one—and the sole survivor lives in Atlanta, Ga. For  Fiat Lux: Illuminating Our Common Home ,  National Geographic photographers had their work projected onto the walls of St. Peter’s Basilica, the Renaissance church located within Vatican City, along with selections from   Joel Sartore’s Photo Ark , a project supported by the National Geographic Society that aims to bring attention to the plight of animals at the hands of human beings. Photo by @joelsartore | The Lemur Leaf Frog is a critically endangered species that historically occurred in Costa Rica, south through Panama into Colombia. They have suffered an estimated 80% loss of population in the last fifteen years and are still in decline. The Lemur Leaf Frog pictured here was bred in captivity from frogs collected in central Panama (El Valle de Antón) during a 2005 expedition to the region. This was part of a collaborative effort by @atlbotanical @zooatl and El Valle Amphibian Conservation Center to rescue amphibian populations from the emergent infectious disease — chytridiomycosis. This fungus, nicknamed 'chytrid' devastated 85% of the Panamanian amphibians from the area. That was ten years ago, and the Lemur Leaf Frogs collected as well as other Panamanian species are housed in the #frogPOD — a biosecure facility at the Atlanta Botanical Garden where the frogs can be studied, and bred in captivity. Public Affairs on Peach did a segment today on South Fork of Peachtree Creek and what is being done to restore habitat at the confluence of the north and south forks. The 'Confluence Trail' is one of our amphibian monitoring sites being studied by the MAAMP. Today, we all had a great time curing the filming, which airs tomorrow at 10am. Atlanta Audubon Director Nikki Belmonte, me, Reporter Adam Murphy and South Fork Conservancy Chair Warner McConaughey after the filming posed with a particularly beautiful adult Spotted Salamander ( Ambystoma maculatum ) Adam was quite fond of the 'lizard like amphibian' and was humored that I made him cleanse his hands with alcohol BEFORE handling the animal. Projecting Change , the movement bringing awareness to the global extinction crisis as well as promoting the new documentary film Racing Extinction . The National Amphibian Expo has chosen to focus on supporting caudate conservation including the Garden's Frosted Flatwoods Salamander Recovery Project! “Shirts for Salamanders” is a t-shirt design contest in which the public will have an opportunity to design the front graphic which will be featured on the shirts. The National Amphibian Expo has partnered with the Amphibian Ark, the Amphibian Conservation Program here, and the Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center to create the 'Shirts for Salamanders' T-shirt contest! In June, Louie Psihoyos , Academy Award winning documentary film-maker for his movie  The Cove , was at the Garden with his crew to film our amphibian collections for his upcoming film Racing Extinction (@Extinction_OPS). The film, due out in 2015, brings awareness to the global extinction crisis, much like how his amazing documentary brought awareness to the plight of the dolphins in Japan. We were honored to be asked to contribute to this project, which will undoubtedly bring the extinction crisis — arguably effecting the amphibians most of all — to the awareness of the general public. To promote awareness of the extinction crisis and the upcoming film, a 30 story high visual saga was projected on the side of the UN building in NYC last weekend.
