Recently metamorphosed Frosted Flatwoods Salamander, Ambystoma cingulatum.
This picture was taken back in May soon after we received young salamanders from our partners at St Mark's Wildlife Refuge. We are building a captive breeding colony for this endangered species with the hopes to release the offspring into managed and protected habitat. Metamorphs are typically drab colored until their adult pattern develops. Lemur Leaf Frogs have disappeared throughout most of their range in Costa Rica and Panama - mostly due to the devastating emergent infectious amphibian disease - #chytridiomycosis (chytrid) We have bred hundreds of Panamanian Lemur Leaf Frogs in our frogPOD, and donated over 400 of them to institutions and amphibian conservation programs. This highlights the importance of captive breeding programs to keep species alive until they can be once again safe in the wild. #Firestone morph (locality) of the Red-eyed Leaf Frog, Agalychnis callidryas. A beautiful variety from central Costa Rica. They can be identified by the deep maroon eyes, and cream/orange stripes on the flanks. Red-eyed Leaf Frog eggs in the Conservatory!
I didn't think it was possible, but the #FuquaConservatory got a little bit cooler this weekend with the successful spawning of Red-eyed Leaf Frogs. Pictured here are the two halves of the clutch, deposited on two different large-leaved #aroids in the turtle pond. The eggs are developing so stay tuned for updates on this momentous reproductive event! Late last year, through a partnership with California State University, we released 370 Agalychnis callidryas into the #TropicalRotunda ... these Red-eyed #LeafFrogs are from two different localities in #CostaRica (#LaSelva and #Bijagual) and we will have to wait until the tadpoles metamorphose before we will know which variety have spawned.
