Cope's Grey Tree Frog, Hyla chrysoscelis have bred in the Howell Fountain with the #Chihuly 'Sapphire Star'!

Image
This amazing sculpture is part of the ongoing Chihuly exhibit at the Garden. Grey Tree Frogs are one of the native urban amphibian species being monitored by our Metro Atlanta Amphibian Monitoring Program (maamp.us). To my knowledge, this species has never bred before in this location - in the center of the Atlanta Botanical Garden right in midtown!

Male Grey Tree Frogs have been heard calling from the incredible glass sculpture - using the artwork as a surrogate 'tree'. Usually, they call from trees over hanging seasonal or fish less wetlands. The female will select the call they like the most and join him up in the tree (or in this case, the Chihuly) then they will both descend to the water in amplexus.

Another great visit with Duke University TIP

Image
A few years ago, I had the honor of designing and instructing an amphibian biology course for the Duke University TIP program. Some of the incredible students I worked with back then still intern in the Amphibian Conservation Program. This summer, it was a double pleasure to host them here for a day because one of our conservation interns, Amit Eichenbaum, who worked in out Frosted Flatwoods Recovery Program all last year is now an instructor for Duke TIP.

Cochranella granulosa, the Granular Glass Frog. Here he is molting, but it sure does look like he's laughing. #LaughingFrog #AmphibianConservation #AmphibianConservationProgram #FrogsNeedOurHelp #SalamandersNeedourHelp #AtlantaBotanicalGardenConservation #EndangeredSpecies #AtlantaBG #FrogsOfInstagram #SalamandersOfInstagram #frogs #frog #salamanders #salamander #ribbit #CaptiveBreeding #CaptiveBred #ExSitu #InSitu #CaptiveAssuranceColony #Cochranella #GlassFrog #Cochranellagranulosa

Evergreen Spiny Toads, part 2. #Incilius coniferus have been in amplexus inside the #RainChamber for several days. Yesterday, they began spawning! Hopefully soon, we will have many #toadlets but that comes with its own challenges. #Inciliusconiferus #Bufonidae #AmphibianConservation #AmphibianConservationProgram #FrogsNeedOurHelp #SalamandersNeedourHelp #AtlantaBotanicalGardenConservation #EndangeredSpecies #AtlantaBG #FrogsOfInstagram #frogs #frog #ribbit #CaptiveBreeding #CaptiveBred #InSitu #CaptiveAssuranceColony

Gliding Leaf Frog, #Agalychnis spurelli in the #RainChamber ...

Hopefully we will be able to breed this remarkable species soon. A. spurelli belongs to the hylid subfamily #Phyllomedusinae - Leaf and Monkey Frogs - Their extensive webbing on the hands and feet enable this frog to glide from one tree to the next. #Agalychnisspurelli #AmphibianConservation #AmphibianConservationProgram #FrogsNeedOurHelp #SalamandersNeedourHelp #AtlantaBotanicalGardenConservation #EndangeredSpecies #AtlantaBG #FrogsOfInstagram #frogs #frog #ribbit #CaptiveBreeding #CaptiveBred #ExSitu #InSitu #CaptiveAssuranceColony

Phantasmal Poison Frog, Epipedobates tricolor from #Ecuador.

This is the most conspicuous species of the four which live free-range in the Fuqua Conservatory. Their calls permeate the tropical rotunda during the day, and with enough patience you can often spot them transporting their eggs from the deposition site to the water.

The last known Rabbs' Fringe-limbed Tree Frog.

Image
#Ecnomiohyla #rabborum today in the #frogPOD This species hasn't been detected in the wild since 2007 and every year gets less likely that there are any more hiding out there. The story of this frog is incredibly sad and highlights the importance of #AmphibianConservation and what the global amphibian declines are telling us. #Ecnomiohylarabborum #AmphibianConservation #AmphibianConservationProgram #FrogsNeedOurHelp #SalamandersNeedourHelp #AtlantaBotanicalGardenConservation #EndangeredSpecies #AtlantaBG #FrogsOfInstagram #SalamandersOfInstagram #frogs #frog #salamanders #salamander #ribbit #CaptiveBreeding #CaptiveBred #ExSitu #InSitu #CaptiveAssuranceColony

We will use this facility to rear young Frosted Flatwoods Salamanders from larvae to breeding age. They are housed separately because these endangered #salamanders like to snack on each other - at least as larvae. Both species of #FlatwoodsSalamander have suffered a 90% loss in population since 2000 and are in imminent risk of extinction. #Ambystoma #Ambystomacingulatum #Ambystomatidae #AmphibianConservation #AmphibianConservationProgram #FrogsNeedOurHelp #SalamandersNeedourHelp #AtlantaBotanicalGardenConservation #EndangeredSpecies #AtlantaBG #FrogsOfInstagram #SalamandersOfInstagram #frogs #frog #salamanders #salamander #ribbit #CaptiveBreeding #CaptiveBred #ExSitu #InSitu #CaptiveAssuranceColony

A young #Anotheca spinosa, the Crowned Tree Frog from #Panama.

Anotheca is declining throughout much if its range. The Garden maintains a #CaptiveAssuranceColony of this remarkable species, producing offspring which can hopefully, one day be returned back to Panama to repopulate the region once the deadly amphibian disease - #AmphibianChytridFungus is no longer a threat.

#LeafFrogs of the sub-family Phyllomedusinae typically lay their eggs on leaves or structures over water, so when the eggs hatch the tadpoles drop into safely to continue development. #Agalychnis #LeafFrog #CaptiveBreeding
