Today, I saw many developing Grey Tree Frog larvae in the Howell F ountain. This Grey Tree Frog tadpole was positioned perfectly in the reflection of the Sapphire Star, giving an almost cosmic appearance. This amazing sculpture is part of the ongoing Chihuly exhibit at the Garden. Grey Tree Frogs are one of the native urban amphibian species being monitored by our Metro Atlanta Amphibian Monitoring Program (maamp.us). To my knowledge, this species has never bred before in this location - in the center of the Atlanta Botanical Garden right in midtown! Male Grey Tree Frogs have been heard calling from the incredible glass sculpture - using the artwork as a surrogate 'tree'. Usually, they call from trees over hanging seasonal or fish less wetlands. The female will select the call they like the most and join him up in the tree (or in this case, the Chihuly) then they will both descend to the water in amplexus. A few years ago, I had the honor of designing and instructing an amphibian biology course for the Duke University TIP program . Some of the incredible students I worked with back then still intern in the Amphibian Conservation Program. This summer, it was a double pleasure to host them here for a day because one of our conservation interns, Amit Eichenbaum, who worked in out Frosted Flatwoods Recovery Program all last year is now an instructor for Duke TIP. The frogPOD is a collection of endangered Panamanian frogs, and composes one of the rarest collections of frogs in the US. Leslie Phillips, lead amphibian keeper and I are standing back, right. This is the most conspicuous species of the four which live free-range in the Fuqua Conservatory. Their calls permeate the tropical rotunda during the day, and with enough patience you can often spot them transporting their eggs from the deposition site to the water.

 #Ecnomiohyla #rabborum today in the #frogPOD This species hasn't been detected in the wild since 2007 and every year gets less likely that there are any more hiding out there. We will use this facility to rear young Frosted Flatwoods Salamanders from larvae to breeding age. They are housed separately because these endangered #salamanders like to snack on each other - at least as larvae. Anotheca is declining throughout much if its range. The Garden maintains a #CaptiveAssuranceColony of this remarkable species, producing offspring which can hopefully, one day be returned back to Panama to repopulate the region once the deadly amphibian disease - #AmphibianChytridFungus is no longer a threat.
