Our first head-started Gopher Froglet of the season! Our first batch of frogs are being released in south Georgia tonight! Gopher Frog (Lithobates capito) is Georgia's rarest Frog, with only a few known breeding populations left. Our Amphibian Conservation Program, in collaboration with UGA and Zoo Atlanta have been head-starting this species for the past seven years. Every year, we collect eggs and rear the tadpoles in captivity. We then release the recently metamorphosed froglets at a protected ephemeral wetland in South Georgia.
