Tiger Salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum is a species listed in Georgia's State Wildlife Action Plan. We will be working to breed this species in our outdoor lab's tri-phasic mesocosms to make more Tiger Salamanders. The world needs more Tiger Salamanders

Here is where the magic happens, and we will conduct breeding experiments for native imperiled amphibians. Offspring produced in this outdoor lab will be released into protected habitat in the wild. A larval Frosted Flatwoods Salamander. Yes, I have posted images of these before — but this picture was taken today in our first completed tri-phasic #mesocosm (only 19 more to go!) These young animals will metamorphose in their own 'mini-wetland' and then ideally mature, and in a couple of years — Breed. Quite an exercise in patience. The majority of the mesocosms are dedicated to Flatwoods Salamanders, but there will still be room to work on other imperiled species such as Gopher Frog, Striped Newt, and of course Tiger Salamander. #Ambystoma #Ambystomacingulatum #FlatwoodsSalamander #FrostedFlatwoodsSalamander #Flattie

Gopher Frog, Lithobates capito This frog is part of the captive breeding program developed by the Amphibian Foundation, Zoo Atlanta, UGA, GA DNR and USFWS. We hope to hear the snoring calls of happy Gopher Frogs echoing through our Buckhead neighborhood in Atlanta sometime this year!

The Gopher Frog, Lithobates capito. This ephemeral wetland breeding species is Georgia's rarest frog, known only from a handful of wetlands in the state. You might think with a name like Gopher Frog, that they would be adept diggers. You would be mistaken. Lazy Gopher Frogs use burrows dug by other species like Gopher Tortoise, Pocket Gophers, tree stumps and the like. Still #AmphibiousAF

Hi Mark. A frog friend and I were at the lily pond today and it was rife with tadpoles of various sizes and stages. Two questions: 1) It looked like the two ducks might be feeding on them ... do they? 2) How many tadpoles actually survive to frog adulthood? — Christine C. This particular topic has come up a lot recently, and one of our visitors beautifully photographed a heron eating a rather large bullfrog out of the lily pond in the Children's Garden . It was a graphic interaction, but demonstrates how vital amphibians are in food webs and one of the reasons we use to illustrate how important it is to keep amphibians around. Almost everything eats them, or their tadpoles, or their eggs ... or all three. Many animals eat frogs exclusively (including some frog species!), and the herons at the Garden obviously love them. They occur globally from the tropics to the sub-arctic regions, and in just about every conceivable habitat, one can find a frog species that has specialized to live there. Despite this diversity, it is generally easy to tell a frog from any other type of animal. Thanks, in part, to the absence of a tail like most other critters. He was collected as part of the Panamanian frog rescue mission in 2005, set forth by ABG and Zoo Atlanta to save frogs being decimated by chytrid fungus. I had the honor of working with him for almost 7 years, and in that time his sad story of being the very last of his kind had, in a powerfully sad way, made him an ‘ambassador' for amphibian conservation and awareness. Amphibians and Solar Eclipses — What to Expect

Green Tree Frogs are typically vocal during August and we may hear an increase in their breeding activity during the eclipse! Very little is known about amphibians and their response to a solar eclipse. We may even expect such a short lapse in photoperiod to be largely ignored by amphibians. One of the few reports on the subject comes from data gathered during a solar eclipse in New England in 1932. Wheeler, et al (1935) documented a lot of activity, with species such as Spring Peepers, Grey Tree Frogs and American Toads temporarily behaving as if it were night. We are encouraging our Metro Atlanta Amphibian Monitoring Program (maamp.us) participants to get out, if possible to their survey sites and record their observations during the eclipse.
